Prostate Cancer Is Leading Cancer Diagnosed in Men

Researchers discovered a protein that offers a promising strategy to prevent the spread of prostate cancer. The American Association for Critical Illness Insurance shared this good news.

This is potentially good news for some of the nearly 200,000 American men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. The statement was released by Jesse Slome, director of the critical illness insurance organization.  Prostate cancer is the leading cancer diagnosis among men accounting for 21 percent of all diagnoses.

Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) studied a family of three closely related proteins. BUSM researchers were the first to show how these proteins function in human cancer.

“Some 893,660 men will hear the dreaded words, you have cancer,” Slome says.  That data comes from the American Cancer Society. “First of all, a cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence.  New treatments are being discovered every day.  As a result, most men diagnosed with cancer will be treated.”

Two-thirds of men will survive cancer diagnosis

“About two thirds of men diagnosed with cancer in 2020 will be alive five years from now,” Slome shared. The claim is based on the organization’s 2020 cancer survival rate report.  “The real toll is their finances. Because even with the best health care insurance, there are costs not covered, The loss of income while undergoing treatment or recovery can be even more important.”

The financial implications of a cancer diagnosis are often more severe than the disease Slome points out.  Because of non-covered medical costs and unpaid time off from work, many individuals face financial consequences.  “The majority of bankruptcies in America are the result of medical-related issues,” Slome cites.  “Many of these people had health insurance when they were diagnosed.”

The instant cost calculator on the Association’s website show costs for cancer insurance. A 45-year old male non-smoker can expect to pay $48 a year for $10,000.  “Say your monthly rent or mortgage is $2,000. You may find cancer insurance for about $100 a year. For that, you’d have the peace of mind that knowing you’ll have cash to cover payments. Cash while you get treatments and take time off from work,” Slome shared.
